Dear GeraldGee, thank you for that treat! I always remember the elegant suit (or is it coat and skirt?) with a dash little Fifties-hat, seam stockings, a clutch, gloves and soft grey suede heels my mother wore. (She told me that at war time, when she was a young girl, they painted the seam on their bare legs). Nowadays the aim seems to be to look like 12years old with a pout, whereas the fashion of that time made you want to grow up - become a lady - be sexy but not a tart. Always a bit detached, always more insinuating than outspoken - a very wise choice - so one remains exciting for a very, very long time!
I was lucky enough at twelve or thirteen years old to be a seam painter during WW2. Also every town had an invisible mender for the stockings that were handed out by American servicemen
A seam painter at twelve? Why did you ever stop? These women are all so wonderfully elegant. It is what I would like to be...but just wasn't designed to be.
