My claim to fame

The young bloke in the black jersey dancing to the Tommy Steele music is me! filmed in the 50s,I was paid £5 for a days dancing (fair money in those days) and got a lift back to London in Tommy Steele's brand new sports car which was a bit frightening as he had only just learned to drive.Maybe it was that that dissuaded me from taking up a career in the film business.Excuse the dispirited dancing but the take that was finally used was at the end of a very long day.

My Place.................renovations

Purchased 1968 with a bit to do
Bought in the sixties for a song, originally an old coaching inn "The Angel and Crown"but had been disused for 15 years and heavily vandalised. I spent one year restoring the building and barns and ran it as an antique business for a number of years.liked it so much I am still living in it in spite of the ghosties but the business long gone. The barn on the left is now my studio.

Wartime London

Empty streets compared with now, most vehicles were vans or taxis as petrol was rationed except for those on official duties.
Buses during daytime turned up every five minutes so travel in the city was easy though the tubes always seemed to be busy and packed. No lights allowed apart from shaded ones on traffic which made the roads dangerous to be on. Towards the end of the war the lights were allowed back on and crowds took to the streets to see them.I remember gazing with wonder at the first floodlit buildings.

Velocette as workhorse

Seems a crime now but I used this prototype clubman which I bought from Stevens for newsreel dispatch riding before pictures could be beamed across space and where speed was needed.Dodgy job but well paid and I was still alive after five years riding. Poor old Venom well clapped out though. Psst Dont think I ever taxed it !

Dutch Swing College

Put this in for the piano playing, quite brilliant. I saw this band in the 50s but then was a completely different line up. If they would have played a saxophone then there would have been a riot !! Very trad bunch we were. But Humph made the breakthrough in the end as he did so with many things.

My Mum....

My mum in the 1920s or if the babe is me, early 30s, as I am one of 7 children so I wouldnt take a bet on it. I do think the Thames on a punt is pure bliss and I spent a lot of time on them in the 50s when I was supposed to be in art school and was lucky enough to have later lived in a barge "Lord Churchill" on the river in the 60s
