  3. Looks like the Burgers of Calais!! Wonderful. I had to start a new blog - you will see why. If your father worked on the Evening Star, then he
worked in Fleet Street? I recall the name Grimes! I worked on a tabloid newspaper that always carried cartoons. My favourite in those days was STYX and I still have one or two originals, tho unsigned.

  4. Hi Margaret, I remember the name Styx but cant remember which paper he was published in.
I was in "The Sketch" (now the sun)mainly, also a few in "Express" and "Evening Standard"
What paper did you work for?

  5. I remember the Sketch, Express and Standard! I worked for Weekend (the Daily Mail's rival to Reveille, then joined the Mirror's new Woman's Mirror paper that didn't survive. STYX and other cartoonists would send in their work and the art editor would make his choices for the next issue. STYX was a freelancer, I think his name was Harding, so he would be seen in many places. Did you use your current name in the
Sketch? I wonder if you ever ran into David English, who eventually became the Express editor, then got a knighthood, and died about two years ago. As you will see I have had to start a new blog because I was phished, so I have a clean slate again!!

  6. I seem to remember "weekend" think I tried them but not accepted.
I was freelance. One wall of my studio was papered with rejection slips. One editor told me he saw about five hundred cartoons for every one published. The trade magazines were easier but paid less.
I have replaced your old blog with your new one.
    Phishing bastards!
