UP IN THE SKY

Derry and Toms roofgarden. We used to come up here as children in WW2. We lived nearby and most of the local parks were closed off and full of anti-aircraft guns.

This might interest you Hare and Masako...

  1. Was this the store that was taken over by Biba?

  2. No Kaz.Biba's was in Barkers next door where they didn't seem to want to put price labels on and the very pretty girls behind the counters were there just because they were pretty especially their bimbo eyes surrounded by mascara and all that other stuff.
I did however buy a tin of "BIBA" Baked beans which sat on my mantelpiece for a couple of years,it was black with gold lettering,a great design but hunger got it in the end.

  3. Think Biba did actually go into the old Derry & Toms building, Gerald. It was their last manifestation in Kensington High Street, as far as I can remember. I had a beautiful suit which I bought in Biba's (the old store). Left it in Crawley one weekend, only to find Karen wearing it to school the follwing week! Wish I still had it! Happy Days xx

  5. Quite right Sheila, was Derry&Toms,All those shop fittings couches etc were sold off for a song when they left. But all too large for the Saturday shop, funny really because she did buy some fittings from me when she had the first shop.

  6. Love that garden. First went there for a boyfriend's 25th birthday party. I remember that he took me out to show me the gardens... I was so blase about it until I realised we were high up on the top of a building! Still remember my surprise. Then went there a lot... last time was when we were leaving London and I took my Middle Son, then a baby, with his godmother. Beaufiful day, just like on the video. Lovely to see it again. xx

  8. Yes Moreidlethoughts.Bus stop the bottom end of Church street. We also sold her some gear when she opened, tailors dummies and 1930s mannequin heads, the sort of stuff we used to sell,we called it "snob junk"
I liked her shop.small but friendly with very pretty and amusing sales girls, very different from Bibas.

  9. Was very austere when we used to go there as children Ladybird, being wartime and all that.
There was a tea room open and our nanny would sit in there while we mucked about

  14. Cor ... memories! I bought a yellow jacket from Bus Stop which I loved to bits. They had never seen anything like it up here in the frozen north. In fact, I was wearing it the day my husband spied me and decided I was the girl he was going to marry!! x
