The Pyefleet marshes

Painting and drawing by my brother Colin Grimes of the marshes that surrounded our house in Essex during the late 40s. It was a place of great solitude then, not a power boat within sight or earshot and even the road crossing the creeks to nearby Mersea Island was usually empty,so much so that we sometimes sailed a homemade land yacht on it.totally magic and never forgotten except for the odd person who didn't like mud...(never understood that)

  1. I can not tell you the memories these pictures and your words bring back for me. I grew up in the U.S. on the east coast of Virginia. It was much like these pictures. As you say, the solitude was wonderful, and I'm sorry to say we took it for granted. It was so beautiful, and we had it all to ourselves. I enjoyed seeing these and reading your thoughts about them.

  2. Yes but how lucky we are to have these memories,I feel a bit sorry for the youngsters of today who would find it increasingly difficult to find these surroundings.

  4. You're certainly right about children today not having as much access to open spaces and natural beauty. Many of the beaches and waterfront areas here have become private.

Since I've experienced vertigo, I've found a number of people who've had it. I never knew it was so common. I'm feeling much better now.
