If it helps - I remember making and wearing can-can petticoats with flat shoes in 1959.And, yes, I have probably worn most of those in the video. Well, not the "hot pants and maxi coat" No, sir!
How fascinating - I'd forgotten how boring it was in the early sixties. I was too young in the forties (just post war) - so I peaked at '68. Dinah - I did the can can thing and looked terrible.
In the sixties when I was a dispatch rider I was waiting at the counter in the Heathrow cargo customs shed when a young fashionable girl dressed to the nth degree in can can skirt and multi petticoats (probably starched) came in to make an enquiry. As she leaned close against the counter the rear of her dress raised on high exposing more than enough to the waiting seated lorry drivers sitting in a row behind her. I thought I should somehow warn her but didn't know how and decided ignorance was bliss and would be less embarrassing. The lorry drivers were very good and not a wolf whistle was made but there was an audible sigh when she moved away from the counter. Wasnt you was it Kaz?

Possibly - and it was all suspenders then - no tights :)
ReplyDeleteStarched! Yes, and it ripped our nylons to bits when we sat down!
ReplyDeleteSuspender belts were OK but I hated those girdles. A sort of Maginot line and difficult to get round.
